Alex P. - new works
The "ALEX P" exhibit start on Saturday 18 September 2004.
This young illustrator from the world of skateboard and graffiti, had already agreeably surprised us with his show held here in January 2001.
His graphic inspiration is now overflowing from paper to the living canvas, through another art form: tattooing.
The artist realises that there are no limits to his imagination. His many references are dissected through his interpretation: symbols of ancestral cultures: images from plastic art, literature: classic fantasies from graphic art: from rock and skate culture, ... and little details from everyday life... become pretexts for sketch projects which may end up inked into somebody's skin.
He can mix subjects from many origins through graphic styles of opposing traditions and create a visual mix based solely on an aesthetic goal.
His palette is enlivened by bright colours, "neon" bordered by thick lines in the service of an iconoclastic drawing, mixing traditional American tattoo motives {old school tattoo}, large stylised letters and elements of traditional Japanese tattooing, all customised in a contemporary manner.
He has found in tattooing a more personal expression, allowing him to affirm his technical precision, to reinforce his discipline to the service of the narration closely tied to his subject.
His art oscillates between dynamic heady illustration tinged with humour and sprinkled with knowing winks and the daring "neon tattoo", without shame or pretension, able to fuse with the skin of a knowing collector.
With this exhibition, Alex P. releases to us his latest works of which the coloured acidity is sure to fire up your neurones ...
BRUX-HELL Exhibition
The "BRUX-HELL" exhibit start on Saturday 6 March 2004.
Everybody knows that our flat country, bursting culturally with folklore and traditions with diverse and distant roots, has for centuries attracted and spurred on those minds passionate about the imaginary and the mysterious. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that a large number of artists can be found here, bewitched by our legends and tales. Invaded by the extraordinary, they cannot help but give themselves over to it, creating the unclassifiable.
This is because the fantasy genre takes us on a voyage into the imaginary, opening the door to a beyond which escapes us, enabling the human psyche to explore a parallel universe, a physical demonstration of the impossible, an intrusion into our most repressed fantasies… So deeply rooted in our collective subconscious, the fantastic catches our attention and restores the power of "fantasia", the personal reconstruction of reality through suggestion. This subtle provocation causes powerful emotions.
The product of our artists’ exuberant creativity, the work is steeped in fantasy and thus maintains our attraction to the magical, the supernatural, escapism… whilst sowing seeds of doubt in our minds in the face of the unreal that is created, and a fascination tinged with fear, anxiety and sometimes even distress for the curious who are unprepared for this world which is bold, ambiguous and at times abstract, where morals have been left behind
In this spirit of quiet insanity our destroyers of dreams present to you their weird and wonderful vision as part of the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film (BIFFF).
BRUX-HELL represents a magic mirror, uncovering Belgian artists whose blood is bubbling with the fantastic, such as:
